Bridging the Gap Between Host Managed SMR Drives and Software-Defined Storage
Learn about the development and implementation of a multi-petabyte archive storage solution in this 28-minute conference presentation from the Storage Developer Conference 2023. Explore the challenges and architectural decisions involved in integrating Host Managed Shingled Magnetic Recording (HM-SMR) drives with software-defined storage environments. Gain insights into sequential write constraints of SMR drives and compare various HM-SMR libraries from a software engineering perspective. Discover how ZoneFS serves as a File IO interface to HM-SMR for Leil software-defined storage and understand the necessary modifications to CI/CD frameworks after HM-SMR drive integration. Examine the importance of data alignment in HM-SMR driven storage development and its influence on stored data formatting. See a demonstration of a graphical UI tool designed for inspecting zone contents within HM-SMR drives during the development process.
