Timing and Adaptation of Spring-feeding Caterpillars - Climate Change Impacts
Explore the intricate world of ecological timing and its implications in this 58-minute lecture by evolutionary biologist Jamie Weir. Delve into the critical importance of synchronization in nature, from plant flowering to predator-prey relationships, and how climate change may disrupt these delicate balances. Focus on the fascinating case of spring-feeding caterpillars, examining how these creatures navigate the unpredictable timing of early spring foliage availability. Learn about the potential consequences of mistimed ecological interactions and discover surprising insights into the resilience of these caterpillars in the face of environmental changes. Gain a deeper understanding of phenology, adaptive strategies, and the complex interplay between different species in ecosystems. Through Weir's research, challenge conventional assumptions about the vulnerability of timed ecological interactions to climate change and consider new perspectives on the robustness of natural systems.
