Communication in the Service of Coordinated Action by Spotted Hyenas
Explore groundbreaking research on collective action and communication in complex animal societies, focusing on spotted hyenas. Delve into innovative tracking technology and computational modeling used to study how vocal communication influences group behavior in species with differentiated relationships. Learn about the sophisticated vocal signaling systems employed by animals to transfer critical information among group members. Examine the interplay between signaling and movement in driving group-level outcomes such as collective decisions and coordinated actions. Compare coordination mechanisms across three mammalian carnivore species: meerkats, coatis, and spotted hyenas. Discover the high-tech collars fitted on spotted hyenas, equipped with GPS, VHF transmitters, accelerometers, magnetometers, microphones, and sound boards, providing unprecedented insights into their spatial positions, activity levels, and vocalizations. Gain valuable knowledge about communication and coordination in heterogeneous animal societies, offering a unique perspective on collective behavior beyond the typical studies of fish schools or bird flocks.
