In Conversation - Organisms and Size - Why Size Matters by Amitabh Joshi and TNC Vidya
Explore the fascinating world of organism size and its profound impact on evolution in this 56-minute conversation featuring evolutionary biologists Amitabh Joshi and TNC Vidya. Delve into how size differences affect internal structures, behaviors, and interactions with the physical environment. Discover why gravity has a greater impact on larger animals while surface tension significantly influences smaller ones. Learn about the evolutionary implications of size, including dwarfism, sexual size dimorphism, and sex allocation theory. Examine real-world examples ranging from fruit flies to whales and the Greenland shark. Gain insights into carbon budgets, linear patterns, and time scales of change in relation to organism size. Understand how size considerations shape various characteristics across species and their evolutionary trajectories.
