Why Should We Care About Exoplanets? What Are They?

Explore the fascinating world of exoplanets in this 29-minute video lecture from the series "The Search for Exoplanets: What Astronomers Know." Dive into the relatively new field of exoplanet research, which has discovered over 1,000 planets orbiting other stars since its inception just a quarter-century ago. Learn why studying exoplanets is crucial, understand the basic properties of our solar system, and construct a scale model to grasp cosmic distances. Examine three striking patterns in our solar system and conceptualize the vast distances between stars. Gain insights into this cutting-edge astronomical research that could potentially lead to discovering Earth-like planets beyond our solar system.
