Sci-Fi Science and Complex Systems - Exploring Alien Civilizations
Explore the intersection of science fiction and complex systems research in this thought-provoking podcast episode featuring SFI Program Postdoctoral Fellow Tamara van der Does. Delve into a speculative "sci-fi science" project that imagines an extraterrestrial civilization with three-parent families. Examine how small changes can lead to massive transformations in complex systems, and discuss the role of counterfactuals and speculation in both scientific research and science fiction. Consider the interplay between individuals and society, and contemplate the potential technological discoveries from an alien visitation. Gain insights into modeling belief change using techniques inspired by statistical physics, and reflect on the value of interdisciplinary approaches in understanding complex phenomena.
