Recognizing the Alien in Us
Explore the intersection of physics and biology in this thought-provoking SFI Community Lecture by astrobiologist and theoretical physicist Sara Walker. Delve into the quest for a new theory of physics that could explain the nature of life, its origins on Earth, and its potential existence elsewhere in the universe. Examine how life, while not violating known physical laws, remains unexplained by them. Journey through the history of physics, from planetary motion to Einstein's theories, and consider how these concepts relate to our understanding of living systems. Investigate the Fermi Paradox, contemplate the fundamental unit of life, and ponder the formation of intelligent physical systems. Gain insights into the cultural and scientific dialogues surrounding the search for extraterrestrial life, and reflect on the broader implications of defining and recognizing life beyond our planet.
