A Brief History of Geometry - Sociology and Pure Mathematics
Explore the fascinating evolution of geometry in this 27-minute video lecture from the Insights into Mathematics series. Trace the development of geometric concepts from Mesolithic times through ancient Greek, Indian, and Islamic contributions up to 1400 A.D. Discover key theorems and their historical significance, including the often-underappreciated Islamic studies of spherical geometry. Examine both applied and theoretical aspects of geometry, with particular emphasis on its connections to astronomy, surveying, and construction. Gain insights into the Platonic solids and their role in geometric understanding. Follow the chronological progression through various civilizations' contributions, from early practical applications to more abstract Greek concepts, and finally to advanced Islamic developments in spherical geometry.
