Unleashing SR-IOV on Virtual Machines - Enhancing Network Virtualization in Cloud Environments
Explore the potential of Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) in multi-tenant cloud environments through this 28-minute KVM Forum presentation. Dive into the challenges of secure and cost-effective workload isolation, and learn how SR-IOV extends PCI multifunction capabilities to create lightweight, isolated "virtual functions." Discover the benefits of SR-IOV-enabled network interfaces for guest VMs and understand the current limitations in SR-IOV utilization. Examine a proposed solution involving SR-IOV emulation on QEMU and its integration with vDPA, complete with performance benchmarks and a detailed design for packet-switching configurability. Gain insights into the ongoing development of SR-IOV emulation on QEMU, including the challenges faced and the potential future applications. Presented by Yui Washizu, a researcher at NTT Open Source Software Center specializing in high-performance virtual networking, and Akihiko Odaki, a Ph.D. candidate and software engineer focusing on QEMU's networking subsystem and processor microarchitecture optimization.
