Build Abstractions, Not Illusions - Creating Effective Platforms for Complex Systems

Explore a thought-provoking conference talk that delves into the intricacies of building complex distributed systems. Reflect on two decades of experience in the field, examining the fine line between helpful abstractions and potentially dangerous illusions in platform engineering. Learn why hiding complexity isn't always the best approach and discover insights on creating useful abstractions that enhance productivity, reduce mistakes, and manage cognitive load effectively. Gain valuable perspectives from Gregor Hohpe, author of Cloud Strategy, as he shares lessons learned from both successful abstractions and disappointing illusions in the world of complex technology.
