Physics in the Dark - Searching for Missing Matter
Embark on a scientific treasure hunt with leading physicists in this 1 hour 22 minute panel discussion from the World Science Festival. Explore the enigma of dark matter, a substance believed to constitute the majority of matter in the universe yet remains undetectable. Delve into topics such as the motion of galaxies, supersymmetric particles, Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), and the role of dark matter in universal structure. Examine the differences between cold and warm dark matter, investigate the "dark sector" possibility, and consider how our understanding of gravity and thermodynamics might need expansion. Ponder the potential connection between dark energy and dark matter, question why galaxies rotate as they do, and speculate on future discoveries in this field. Join moderator Brian Greene and panelists Mariangela Lisanti, Joseph Silk, Erik Verlinde, and Risa Wechsler as they challenge fundamental ideas about the universe and discuss the implications of potentially rethinking our cosmic understanding.
